AC Installation Hong Kong | Window and Split AC Installation

Planning a window or split AC installation? Send photos of the opening, unit position, pipe route and old unit so the site conditions can be reviewed before a quotation.

AC Installation
Key point

What does a complete AC installation include?

A complete installation matches the selected unit to the opening or wall, indoor and outdoor positions, structural support, refrigerant pipework, condensate drain, power supply, airflow and future service access. It includes protection, fixing, connection, testing and handover rather than only placing a new machine in position.

A preliminary photo review can identify obvious constraints, but final scope depends on measurements, the exact model, building rules and safe access. Window and split units require different site checks. R32 systems must also follow the manufacturer's minimum room-area, installation-height and ignition-source restrictions, with trained practitioners using suitable leak-detection and recovery equipment. For example, a bedroom with an existing window opening may only need size, support and drainage checks. A new split system in a living room needs the outdoor position, pipe route, power and future service access planned together.

Practical checklist

Site survey checklist before choosing a model

  • Room use and cooling demand

Floor area is only a starting point. Sun exposure, ceiling height, windows, occupancy, heat-producing equipment, insulation and operating hours affect the appropriate capacity and whether one air path can serve the occupied zone.

  • Window opening or indoor-unit wall

Measure the actual opening, support and clearances for a window unit. For a split unit, confirm a wall position that supports the unit, distributes air without blowing directly at occupants and remains accessible for filters, drainage and future service.

  • Outdoor-unit position and heat rejection

Confirm safe support, ventilation, discharge clearance, weather exposure, noise impact and access for installation and future repair. A visually convenient location may still be unsuitable if hot discharge air recirculates or technicians cannot reach the service points.

  • Pipe, drain and wall route

Plan copper pipes, insulation, control cable, wall penetration and condensate fall together. Long or concealed routes, pumps, trunking, false ceilings and shared drains add materials and can make later leak tracing more difficult.

  • Power and building requirements

Identify the supply arrangement, isolation, capacity and any fixed-circuit work. Check management booking, exterior-work approval, scaffolding, noise hours, lift protection and debris removal before fixing an installation date.

Installation, testing and handover sequence

  1. 1
    Confirm model and written scope

Match model dimensions and specifications to the surveyed position. List removal, bracket, pipe length, drain route, trunking, wall work, power work, high-level access and finishes so optional work is not discovered only after the old unit is removed.

  2. 2
    Protect and prepare the site

Protect floors, furniture, lift and common areas as applicable; isolate power and establish safe access. Verify hidden services before drilling and keep the work route controlled where occupants or customers remain nearby.

  3. 3
    Fix the units and services

Level and support a window unit with suitable drainage and sealing. For a split system, secure indoor and outdoor units, route and insulate pipes, provide continuous drain fall where practical, connect controls and complete approved power work.

  4. 4
    Complete refrigerant-circuit procedures

Follow the exact manufacturer installation manual for pipe preparation, connection, leak testing, evacuation or other specified procedures. Refrigerant type and charge requirements belong to that model; R32 and R410A equipment, tools and refrigerants are not treated as interchangeable.

  5. 5
    Commission and hand over

Run the unit and check controls, cooling response, airflow, abnormal noise, visible vibration and condensate drainage. Explain filter access, basic use, warranty or service documents and which areas must remain accessible for maintenance.

Window vs split AC installation

FactorWindow ACSplit AC
PositionsOne unit in a suitable opening with exterior airflow.Separate indoor and outdoor units linked by pipes, cable and drain.
Main checksOpening size, support, level, drainage, sealing and vibration. Both unit positions, wall work, pipe distance, drain fall, power and service access.
Noise and layoutThe compressor sits close to the room; vibration and opening condition matter.Indoor noise can be lower and placement more flexible, but outdoor and pipe planning is greater.
Additional workOpening alteration, frame, bracket, weather sealing or removal may be needed.Long pipe, trunking, drain pump, scaffolding, platform or fixed wiring may be needed.
Future serviceKeep the unit and exterior side safely reachable where possible.Keep both units, joints, drain and control points accessible rather than concealing every route.

Choose from the surveyed site, not from unit price alone. A suitable existing opening can make a window unit practical; a split unit offers layout benefits only when outdoor access, pipework, drainage and service access are workable.

Reference notes

R32 and electrical installation safety facts

These requirements apply to safety and installation scope; they are not claims that every site or model uses R32.

R32 classification
Mildly flammable

EMSD requires a flame label and says installation must follow the manufacturer's minimum room area and installation height. Work should be performed by trained practitioners with suitable leak-detection and recovery equipment.

Fixed-circuit connection
Registered contractor

EMSD states that connection work where an air conditioner is supplied from a fixed electrical circuit must be carried out by a registered electrical contractor.

Post-installation check
Trial operation

The cited Daikin installation manual instructs the installer to conduct a trial operation after installation and explain operation and care to the customer.

What changes the installation quotation?

  • Exact unit and supply arrangement

Confirm model availability, unit-only or supply-and-install scope, delivery, old-unit removal and disposal. Website prices are references until model and site requirements are confirmed.

  • Standard materials versus actual quantities

State included bracket, pipe, insulation, cable, drain, trunking, wall opening and sealing allowances. Additional length or a different route should be measured and priced transparently.

  • Access, scaffolding and management

External walls, platforms, high floors, restricted hours, parking, lift protection, permits, scaffolding or suspended access can change labor, equipment and scheduling.

  • Power, drainage and remedial work

A new circuit, switch, drain alteration, pump, opening correction, structural support or decoration repair is separate from a basic installation unless explicitly included.

  • Commissioning and documents

Clarify testing, operating demonstration, warranty registration, photos, disposal and follow-up. A lower quote that excludes evacuation, drain testing or safe access is not an equal scope.

Common questions

AC installation FAQ

Is room area enough to select horsepower and quote installation?

No. Area helps with an initial capacity estimate, but sun, windows, ceiling, occupancy, heat sources and operating hours also matter. Installation cost still depends on the opening or wall, outdoor position, pipe route, drain, power and safe access.

Why are indoor and outdoor photos needed?

They reveal positions, likely pipe and drain routes, support, access and building restrictions before a visit. Photos do not replace measurement, but they reduce the risk of choosing a physically unsuitable model or omitting obvious high-level work.

Does the website unit price include installation?

Only when an offer explicitly states the included installation scope. Otherwise it is a reference unit price. Final supply-and-install cost is confirmed after the exact model, included materials, removal, access and site extras are agreed.

Why must a split system be evacuated and tested?

The refrigerant circuit has to be prepared according to the exact manufacturer instructions, including the specified connection, leak-check and evacuation procedures. Commissioning then checks controls, cooling response, drainage, noise and observable vibration.

What should be included at handover?

The customer should receive an operating demonstration, relevant warranty or service documents, the agreed test result and an explanation of filter, drain and service access. Any excluded finishing, observation period or follow-up item should be stated.

What should I send before asking about AC installation?

Send the unit model or clear photos, the district, a short description of the issue or work needed, and photos of the installation position. This helps us decide whether a site visit is needed before a quotation.

Can the final quotation be confirmed from photos alone?

Photos support a preliminary assessment, but the final scope can depend on access, hidden conditions, drainage, power, parts and safety. We explain any item that needs on-site confirmation before work starts.

What is checked after the work is completed?

The technician tests the work within the agreed scope and checks relevant operation such as cooling response, airflow, drainage, noise or controls. Any condition needing further observation is explained at handover.
